Charming Trondheim and the Suhm huset at the NTNU University Museum will be the venue for the 2016 ForBio meeting. We invite all MSc and PhD students, postdocs, supervisors, faculty and the broader biosystematics community to attend!

ForBio annual meetings aim to gather scientists and students working on or interested in biosystematics in order discuss about current projects and results, share experience on methods and strengthen networking within the scientific community.

This year, the meeting will be held in Trondheim, Norway, from Monday April 25th to Wednesday 27th.

Key note speakers will be invited to this meeting and will give valuable talks on the state of the art within the field of taxonomy and systematics, with the objective to inspire members to see how cutting edge methods can innovate our field. We encourage attendees to use this meeting as an opportunity to present and discuss their own research as it provides a platform for exchange and dialogue about biosystematics.

There is no registration fee and you are all welcome to participate. ForBio members (PhD students and Postdocs) presenting their research (oral or poster) will have free travel and shared/single accommodation booked through ForBio.

Associated workshops

ForBio is organizing a preconference and a postconference workshop, specifically intended for those that would like to get the most out of the meeting. These workshops will also be open to members not attending the meeting. The space is limited in both workshops and position will be filled in a first come first serve basis.

- Pre-conference workshop (24 April): Information Visualisation in Science Communication

Tutor: Angela Morelli

This one-day workshop is a hands-on experience aimed at scientists and researchers who work in an environment that requires presenting information effectively. Participants will be introduced to the bright world of information visualization where the intersection of text and image, perception and cognition, beauty and function, logic and emotion enables us to create splendid visions and to reveal what hides behind our data. Participants will learn how to embrace the audience in the design process in order to identify the right messages and build memorable narratives. Participants will be required to complete some tasks beforehand.

Angela Morelli is an Italian information designer based in Norway. She has collaborated with a number of research organizations in Europe. She is an international speaker and Associate Lecturer at Central St Martins in London. She runs Information Design workshops internationally for designers and non-designers. Angela has served as an ambassador for virtual water research and was named a 2012 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. She is CEO and co-founder of Infodesignlab.

- Post-conference workshop on DELTA and curatorial management (28-30 April)

Instructor: Charles Oliver Coleman, Museum für Naturkunde Berlin

The DELTA format (DEscription Language for TAxonomy) is a flexible and powerful method of recording taxonomic descriptions for computer processing. In this course you will learn how to create a DELTA dataset and take the most of its features: generation of fully formatted description for a taxonomic publications (how to write a taxonomic publication by pushing a button with consistent terminology and avoiding redundant phrases) and generation interactive identification tools. Delta matrices can be exported into Nexus format for phylogenetic analyses and allow the incorporation of text charcaters (such as author of the species, year of description, references reviewed, geographic distribution, habitat, notes, etc) and images. Curation of collections, collection databases and things to consider when dealing with digital data will also be dealt with in this course.

This course will take place in the NTNU Sletvik field station, two hours by car from Trondheim. ForBio will arrange accommodation, meals and transport to the station for ForBio members. ForBio associates and other attendees to the conference interested in this workshop should sign up for the course though the registration form. Please contact us if you have any questions.

All attendees need to bring their laptop. In the course you will learn DELTA step by step with a given example and later you can try out what you have learnt with data from the taxon you are working on yourself by setting up your own DELTA matrix. For this part please bring identification literature and printed keys of your favourite creatures.
